Helbing Lipp Recny Architects developed an expansion and renewal program for this aging library in Annandale to increase its size to 30,000 square feet. The design gave the tired building a new image and presence in the community, while accommodating the library’s growing needs.
The existing copper standing seam roof around the perimeter of the building was preserved and replicated in the new additions. The central roof was removed and a new, high roof was installed; this allowed large clerestory glass to be included so the interior spaces could receive natural light. The interior of the building was gutted and rebuilt to include circulation stacks, study areas, conference room, and employee offices and lounge. The building also houses several community-focused spaces that can be used after hours including a 100-seat multipurpose room, a small kitchen, conference rooms, and restrooms.
